Orcas (Washington State's Official Marine Mammal), Gray Whales and on rare occasion Humpback Whale are seen in the Puget Sound waters surrounding the Kitsap Peninsula.
The extended Puget Sound area is home to three resident pods of Orca Whales that occasionally follow the salmon into the bays and waters around Kitsap. These residents eat primarily salmon. Transient Orcas, the meat eating variety, spend most of their time in the ocean but visit Hood Canal and Puget Sound in search of sea lions and other prey.

Twenty thousand Gray Whales will journey along Washington's coast in the Spring, en route from their breeding grounds in Mexico to feeding grounds in Alaska. This annual 8,000-mile migration is the longest taken by any mammal. Every Spring a small group of grays enter the shallow waters of our own backyard in search of ghost shrimp before continuing their migration northward. Gray whales are 'baleen' whales (as opposed to 'toothed' whales such as Orca), filtering their food from the seafloor or from the surrounding seawater using fine fibrous baleen plates.
Other Marine Mammals found in our area include Dall's Porpoise, California Sea Lions, Harbor seals, and Sea Otters.
